Maybe today is THAT DAY

In my travel experience, every trip has one day on which I decide I  never should have done this thing, I should have just stayed home, I hate everyone, they hate me, and I should go eat worms.

Today might be THAT DAY.

Greg has Wednesday off from teaching, so we planned to hit the Roman ruins and see some of the freakin' old city. (Barcelona is three cities: current, old, and freakin' old.)   Admittedly I started the day badly by not sleeping half the night, then sleeping till noon. Cassie had gone back to sleep by the time I got up, and she woke up in no mood to do anything. We told her it was time to power through the jet lag and see some of the city.

So we dragged a sulky, grumpy teen and a thoroughly excited little boy down to the touristy area with the freakin' old stuff. Nicky LOVES old rocks and was delighted. Cassie? Meh.  Then she announced that her back was hurting again, and she had a migraine.

To make a long and irritating story short, I ended up pointing out to her that I never gave a raccoon's fart about going to Barcelona, and the only reason I am anywhere near here is because she said she wanted to go. "I know, but....I don't LIKE museums."

Then why, may I ask, did you want to go to Europe?

"There aren't things to do in Europe that don't involve museums?"

"Sure there are. And you could do every single one of them in the USA." Which isn't necessarily true. But let's face it, most of the things that make Europe wildly cool are the older things, and the fact that they have survived to co-exist with modern life.  If (like most teenagers) you can't appreciate the passage of time and the artistry and passion in these old buildings, why in hell would you bother?  Why did I even bring her here, at enormous cost?

It will get better. She will get through the day, and we will all sleep better, and we will find things we can enjoy as a group.  She will turn her attitude around. Either that, or she will get really familiar with tram tracks.

  1. Well, good thing you got THAT day out of the way early in the trip so you all can enjoy the rest of it. It will get better, and, you're going to be there long enough you can each develop some routines and maybe even some peeps that will make you feel more in control.
